ABC Exec Hints at General Hospital’s Future at the Network

By and large, General Hospital fans love a good cliffhanger — except when it’s about the show rather than on the show. Luckily, it doesn’t sound like we have to worry about ABC’s enthusiasm about its one and only remaining daytime drama.

The soap is “absolutely a tremendous [source of] pride for us,” Disney Television Group president Craig Erwich told Soap Hub at the winter Television Critics Association press tour. It has “been on for 60 years. That is a remarkable achievement. And the great thing about General Hospital is that it’s on daily. It’s an opportunity for us to delight, entertain and surprise people on a daily basis.

“The joy,” he added, “is to have an audience who has watched the show for 60 years; they’re now watching with their kids and grandkids… Because the stories are on [Monday through Friday], they just become a part of people’s lives — and that’s the goal of ABC.”

In case all that didn’t make it clear, General Hospital ain’t going anywhere. “We’re very committed to the show. You saw the way that we celebrated the 60th [anniversary with a primetime special]. We do that because it’s a show we’re very proud of.”

And hey, if ABC ever decides to unmake the mistake that it made by cancelling some of our former favorites, we have ideas at the ready to cross over General Hospital characters to a reboot of Ryan’s Hope (which already has ties to Port Charles thanks to Delia and daughter Ava Jerome) and to remix One Life to Live for a new generation.
