Lancaster General Health opened its new four-bay trauma unit on Thursday, part of the hospital’s expansion of its Emergency Department to shorten wait times, ease overcrowding, and improve treatment.Lancaster General Hospital is the only level-one trauma center in Lancaster County. The new unit puts state-of-the-art technology at doctors’ and nurses’ fingertips.Trauma surgeon Dr. Eric Bradburn said the “brand-new facility doubles, even triples our capabilities to take care of traumatically ill patients.”Doctors said it puts blood for transfusions and equipment such as CT scans and X-rays right there so patients don’t have to travel to other floors, saving precious time in emergencies.Dr. Michael Ripchinski said there are now 80 beds in the ER. The staff is working to reduce “boarding” time, the time patients stay in the ER before being admitted to the hospital and having a room ready.The hospital plans to expand the number of emergency room beds to 96 by June.
