SAG Awards 2024 Nominations: ‘Barbie’ and ‘Oppenheimer’ Tie for Films, ‘Succession’ Leads All With Five Nods

“Barbenheimer” dominated nominations for the 30th Screen Actors Guild Awards just as the two blockbusters once ruled over the box office. Both “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” received a leading four nominations, including nods their ensembles. The movies will vie for that top prize alongside “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “American Fiction” and “The Color Purple.”

On the television front, “Succession” had a leading five nominations for its final season. It was followed closely behind by “Ted Lasso,” “The Bear” and “The Last of Us,” all of which earned four nominations. “Succession,” a look at an aging media mogul and his children, is up for best ensemble in a drama series. It will compete against “The Crown,” “The Gilded Age,” “The Last of Us” and “The Morning Show.” Best TV comedy ensemble will be a race between “The Bear,” “Ted Lasso,” “Only Murders in the Building,” “Abbott Elementary” and “Barry.”

Warner Bros. Discovery had the most nominations of any company, receiving 20 for its films and shows, a group that includes “The Last of Us,” “Succession,” “The Color Purple” and “Barbie.” It was followed by Netflix, with 12 and Apple with 11.

The nominations celebrate performances in films and shows released during one of the most tumultuous years in the history of the union, one that saw its members go on strike for 118 days after contract negotiations broke down. A new pact was reached in November, with the actors receiving pay increases. It also enhanced the residuals actors earn when their work appears on streaming services and included protections against the use of artificial intelligence.

SAG’s choices are closely scrutinized because they often overlap with those of the Oscars. After all, many of its members are also part of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences. Last year, for instance, the four performers who won leading film awards — Brendan Fraser, Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis — went on to capture Oscars for their work. Since its inception in 1995, only four movies have won best picture at the Oscars without receiving a nomination from SAG for cast ensemble: “Braveheart” (1995), “The Shape of Water” (2017), “Green Book” (2018) and “Nomadland” (2020).

“Oppenheimer” star Cillian Murphy, who plays the haunted physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer,” was nominated for best leading actor, alongside Paul Giamatti, a veteran character who gets a starring role as an ornery prep school teacher in “The Holdovers.” The two actors won the prizes for best lead performance in a drama and best lead performance in a comedy at last Sunday’s Golden Globes. They will compete against Colman Domingo (“Rustin”), Jeffrey Wright (“American Fiction”) and Bradley Cooper (“Maestro”).

Best leading actress in a motion picture will be a race between front-runners Lily Gladstone, who plays an Osage woman who is targeted for her wealth in “The Killers of the Flower Moon,” and Emma Stone, portraying a woman who embarks on a journey of self-discovery in “Poor Things.” Both women captured top acting prizes at the Globes. They will compete at the SAG Awards against Carey Mulligan (“Maestro), Annette Bening (“Nyad”), and Barbie herself, Margot Robbie.

It was a “Succession”-heavy lead actor in a drama series, with Kieran Culkin, Brian Cox and Matthew Macfadyen all nominated. Pedro Pascal (“The Last of Us”) and Billy Crudup (“The Morning Show”) round out the category. Best actress in a drama series will be a contest between Sarah Snook (“Succession”), Jennifer Aniston (“The Morning Show”), Elizabeth Debecki (“The Crown”), Bella Ramsey (“The Last of Us”) and Keri Russell (“The Diplomat”).

There were some notable snubs and surprises among this year’s crop of contenders. Leonardo DiCaprio was overlooked for his starring role in “Killers of the Flower Moon,” as was Greta Lee, who received raves for her turn in “Past Lives.” Penélope Cruz, however, made the cut in best supporting actress for her performance in “Ferrari” despite being overlooked by other awards bodies. “May December,” one of the year’s most acclaimed films, was completely shut out with stars Julianne Moore and Charles Melton failing to the make cut. On the TV front, “The Gilded Age,” a period drama about 19th century New York society, was not widely expected to earn an ensemble nod, while “Yellowjackets,” a buzzy series about a group of plane crash survivors, was shut out.

The 30th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards ceremony will stream live globally on Netflix for the first time this year as part of their multi-year deal.
