The superintendent sent a letter to families telling them the district is working with the Pennsylvania Department of Health to manage the outbreak, adding that it has increased cleaning and alerted students who may have had a close contact.

“I don’t think it’s anything to panic over but definitely something to be careful about,” said Rachel Mowry, with WellSpan Health Urgent Care.

Whooping cough is extremely contagious and can be dangerous for some patients.

“You want to make sure that we are covering our coughs and sneezes, washing our hands and trying to stay home when we’re sick to keep other people safe,” Mowry said.

If you do feel sick, you should check with your doctor.

Transmission, symptoms

Whooping cough is spread through the air when an infected person sneezes or coughs.

According to the state health department, an infected person is most contagious early in the illness and can spread whooping cough for up to three weeks after symptoms start if not treated with an antibiotic.

The earliest symptoms are like the common cold – a runny nose, sneezing, a low-grade fever and a mild cough.

Coughing gradually becomes more severe, often leading to “fits” of numerous, rapid coughs. A long attempt to breathe at the end of a cough may be followed by a “whoop” sound.

Prevention

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the best way to prevent whooping cough is to get vaccinated.

Two vaccines in the United States help prevent whooping cough: DTaP and Tdap.
