Son-in-law, a former MLB player, arrested in deadly 2021 shooting of Tahoe-area couple
Two people have been arrested in connection with the deadly shooting of a couple at their North Lake Tahoe-area home two years ago, the Placer County Sheriff’s Office said on Friday. Suspects Danny Serafini, 49, and Samantha Scott, 33, were arrested on Friday in separate Nevada locations and know both each other and the victims of the June 5, 2021, shooting in the Homewood neighborhood, the sheriff’s office said. Robert Gary Spohr, 70, was killed from a single gunshot wound. His wife, Wendy Wood Spohr, 68, was hospitalized after being shot at least twice, recovered then died a year later, according to the sheriff’s office. The San Francisco Chronicle reported that she killed herself. Serafini is the son-in-law of the victims, according to the Placer County Sheriff’s Office. Scott also had a close connection to the family and is believed to have been a nanny at some point, officials said. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Serafini is married to one of the victims’ daughters and was a Major League Baseball pitcher whose career spanned 11 years with several teams. The Nevada state Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office said Serafini also faces child abuse and endangerment charges. It’s not clear what these charges are related to. Video surveillance footage from the home and on West Lake Boulevard captured a man wearing a hoodie and face-covering and walking to the home several hours before the shooting. Serafini was arrested in Winnemucca and Scott in Las Vegas with the assistance of various law enforcement agencies. “Today, justice was served,” Placer County Sheriff Wayne Woo said in a statement. “The apprehension of those responsible for the tragic events that unfolded in Homewood, North Lake Tahoe in 2021 stands as a testament to the unwavering dedication of our detectives, law enforcement partners, and the persistence of our pursuit of truth. Understand that my team’s commitment to unraveling the most complex of cases prevails, and those who inflict harm upon our community will be held accountable every time.”The sheriff’s office said the two people arrested will be extradited to Placer County. Both face murder charges in the death of Robert Gary Spohr, and an attempted murder of Wendy Wood. | More National News Below | American mother and daughter freed by Hamas after being held hostageIf you or someone you know needs help, you can talk with the National Suicide and Crisis Lifeline by calling or sending a text message to 988, or you can chat online here.
